After searching out several old posts here about this, and also reading other places on the web where this error is also reported, I think NOBODY ever really solved the mysterious problem. The workaround most often suggested seems to be to just use Windows Explorer to copy your TBird and FF profiles to a backup location.Mozilla Thunderbird is freeware open-source and cross-platform application which provides you email functionalities in large quantity such as junk filtering, themes, message management and much more. After years of excellent use, suddenly now MozBackup (v. 1.5.1 on WIndows 7 Pro, with Mozilla Thunderbird 15.0.1 and Firefox 15.0.1, with full Admin rights to everything including all programs, the backup location, etc on my personal computer) has spontaneously started refusing to backup.

For BOTH Firefox and Thunderbird, the MozBackup backup progress indicator looks like it's running, but just prior to finishing it says:' Backup's file isn't valid. Backup has failed.'

FIXES SUGGESTED ON FORUMS THAT DON'T WORK:Some posters suggested de-selecting all extensions from the MozBackup, but that doesn't work. Some suggested cleaning the trash folders and in TBird, Compacting each Local Folder individually, but that doesn't work. Uninstalling MozBackup THOROUGHLY plus deleting all MozBackup keys in regedit then reinstalling a freshly downloaded copy of MozBackup.exe doesn't work.
